Squadron History

Following its service in the Pacific Theatre with Hudson bombers 2 Squadron participated in the Malayan Emergency equipped with Lincoln and Canberra bombers. The Squadron took its Canberra bombers to South Vietnam flying approximately 12000 sorties and dropped 76389 bombs with the loss on two aircraft and one crew. On its return from Vietnam 2 Squadron was based at RAAF Base Amberley Brisbane Queensland latterly using its Canberras predominately for target towing and aerial mapping utilising call sign Magpie in recognition of the Squadrons emblem. 2 Squadron disbanded in 1982.

The squadron was reactivated in 2000 at RAAF Base Williamtown and RAAF Base Tindal to provide Airborne Early Warning and Control under the command of the Surveillance and Response Group 42 Wing designated to operate the Boeing 737 AEWC aircraft procured as part of Project Wedgetail. The RAAF accepted the first two 737 AEWC aircraft redesignated E 7A on 26 November 2009 and three more at the end of 2010. With crew conversion training continuing the Squadron participated in Exercise Talisman Sabre with US and Australian forces. The Squadron deployed one of its Wedgetails to Al Minhad Air Base UAE in September 2014 as part of the coalition to combat Islamic State forces in Iraq commencing combat operations in Iraq on 1 October 2014. The Squadron conducts surveillance air defence fleet support and force coordination operations in defence of Australian sovereignty and national interests. In addition the Squadron provides support to civil operations law enforcement regional cooperation and peacekeeping.
