History 1939 - 2013

Motto: - Fama Ex Factis - Fame Through Deeds

19 Squadron formed on 1 September 1939 at the same time as 17 Squadron as part of the Airways Wing at Swartkop with ex-South African Airways Junkers Ju-52/3M airliners and disbanded with 17 Squadron on 1 December 1939 when 17 18 and 19 Squadrons were amalgamated to form 50 Squadron. 19 Squadron SAAF was reformed on 12 August 1944 on the renumbering of the RAFs 227 Squadron at Biferno Air Base
Italy with Beaufighters as part of Balkans Air force carrying out bombing and strafing attacks in Greece and Yugoslavia until the end of the war with the squadron disbanding on 10 July 1945.

19 Squadron reformed on 1 March 1970 from a Flight of 17 Squadron equipped with Pumas at Swartkop. While A Flight was based at Swartkop B Flight operated for a time from Durban. In 1988 E Flight at Swartkop become the first unit to be equipped with the new Oryx. A Flight moved to Louis Trichardt AFB on 1 January 1991 with the rest of 19 Squadron relocating to Louis Trichardt AFB on 1 January 1992 receiving Alouette IIIs. In early 1994 19 Squadron was the first squadron to be fully equipped with the Oryx. The Squadron moved to Hoedspruit AFB on 1 January 2004.
