F 4 C Phantoms were received between October 1971 and September 1972 under Peace Alfa contract and designated C 12 by the Spanish Air Force C stood for Caza Fighter and 12 represented the 12th fighter type in service since the creation of the Spanish Air Force Ejercito del Aire. The F 4C Phantoms were assigned to Escuadron 121 and Escuadron 122 of Ala 12 Wing at Torrejon Air Base. To support the Phantoms a fleet of three KC-97L Stratotankers was acquired in 1972 equipping Escuadron 123 under Ala 12 Torrejon which was being replaced by Escuadron 301 with KC-130H Hercules tankers from January 1976.
121 Squadron and 122 Squadron of Ala 12 reequipped with EF 18 Hornet fighters in 1989.
