EF 18 Hornet fighters were received in 1986 and designated C 15 by the Spanish Air Force C stood for Caza Fighter and 15 represented the 15th fighter type in service since the creation of the Spanish Air Force Ejercito del Aire. The Hornets were assigned to 15 ALA at Zaragoza AB and its 152 Escuadron Marte Mars was declared combat ready in 1989. 151 Escuadron was tasked with all weather interception ground attack and SEAD Suppression of Enemy Air Defence.
